"The Old Thatched House" in the Strand

Ancestry link Frederick Cooke died in 1886 at Charing Cross  Hospital.  His last address was the "Old Thatched House" 419 Strand.  He was a licensed victualler.. Thatched houses aren't something I associate with central London! I came across Frederick Cooke when I was looking for another Frederick Cooke (who my 3 a great uncle had worked for).
"The Ipswich Journal" 2 October 1725 "Here lies Leg of Master Conder: But he's alive, and that's a Wonder. It was cut off, by Dr. Johnson, The famousest Surgeon of the Nation." Who was Master Conder?  As the article is in an Ipswich newspaper, probably one of the Conders living in Ipswich?  The earliest Ipswich Conder entry I can see in Ancestry is in 1744.  Which raises the question - where did the Ipswich Conders live before they arrived in Ipswich? Who was Dr. Johnson?  My first thought was Doctor Samuel Johnson, the lexicographer.  But he lived from 1709-1784, and wasn't a medical doctor.
